Wasps’ 17th successive home win took them to the top of Pool 2 of the Champions Cup and introduced Kurtley Beale to European Rugby fans in memorable fashion. The Wallaby signing scored the game's first try and was named Man of the Match on his Wasps debut, having just pipped skipper Joe Launchbury to the accolade.

The bonus point win means they are now three points ahead of Connacht Rugby, with a difficult trip to Galway ahead next week.

The winning margin was rather harsh on the visitors, who stretched Dai Young’s men all the way. Wasps only led by three points going into the final quarter, but tries from skipper Joe Launchbury and Josh Bassett made the game safe, and also ensured that Connacht went away empty-handed.

The Connacht pack put down an early marker in the first scrum, when they stole Wasps ball. After sending a penalty to the corner they created an overlap on the right, but Josh Bassett pulled off a timely interception a few metres from the line. Wasps then broke away through Nathan Hughes. He had support on both sides, but the defence was tracking back to block the pass. When he managed to move the ball to Dan Robson, the pass was knocked back by Connacht.

A Wasps penalty to the corner gave them the attacking platform they needed. After a series of phases in which Ashley Johnson, Thomas Young, Dan Robson and Christian Wade all went close, play came back infield and Jimmy Gopperth made a dart for the line. Enough defenders had been sucked in to create the space for Kurtley Beale to take Dan Robson’s pass and power through two tackles for a try, just seven minutes into his Wasps debut. Jimmy Gopperth added the conversion.

After 14 minutes, Connacht pressure earned them a penalty inside the Wasps 22, 16 metres in from the left touchline, but Jack Carty’s kick went wide of the left-hand post. Three minutes later, Kurtley Beale was sent to the sin bin for what was adjudged to be a high-tackle as Tiernan O’Halloran slipped. This time Carty was on target from 40 metres. After Christian Wade leapt high to gather the restart, a promising-looking Wasps attack was stopped by another penalty near the right corner.

A minute later, Wasps were awarded a penalty on the Connacht 22 a few metres to the right of the posts and Jimmy Gopperth restored the seven-point advantage with 23 minutes gone. Within a minute, a wheeling scrum inside the home 22 appeared to have disrupted Connacht ball, but scrum-half Kieran Marmion somehow secured possession and stole away for a try, which Carty converted. Directly from the restart, Marmion found a gap in the Wasps midfield to make 40 metres before a pass out to the right was knocked on, on the 22.

Connacht kept up the pressure, but another knock-on ended a threatening move in the final play before Kurtley Beale returned to the field. Wasps immediately conceded a free-kick for early engagement at the scrum, giving the visitors a scrum of their own 15 metres from the line. They again went through the phases, with a strong charge by Jake Heenan taking them close, before Rob Miller pounced on a loose ball enabling Jimmy Gopperth to clear to safety.

After a penalty set up a Wasps lineout near the right corner, the Connacht defence were again penalised on the 22 and Jimmy Gopperth put Wasps back in front, four minutes before half-time.

A minute later, left-wing Cian Kelleher’s knock-on gifted Wasps a scrum on the Connacht 22, five metres in from touch. Wasps won quick possession, but Connacht’s line speed forced a knock-on from Alapati Leiua as he tried to gather Jimmy Gopperth’s short pass. The scrum won the visitors a penalty, which was sent to touch to end the half with Wasps narrowly ahead 13-10.

Connacht posed an early threat in the second half, when Tiernan O’Halloran gathered a long clearance and combined with Cian Kelleher to make 50 metres down the left. Wasps survived that scare and stretched their lead after 43 minutes. Ashley Johnson broke from a maul inside the Connacht 22 to take play to within three metres of the line. Quickly recycled ball found Nathan Hughes, who powered over near the posts. Gopperth’s conversion took the lead to 10 points, but Connacht made an immediate response after Rory Parata intercepted Gopperth’s pass to go in unopposed from the 22. Carty had the simplest of conversions to reduce the deficit. 

Wasps’ eagerness to run the ball out of defence almost cost them dear, when a pass was spilt in midfield. The loose ball was hacked downfield and the defence managed to get across and make the ball safe. Another Connacht attack was thwarted when Christian Wade gathered a threatening kick near the corner before beating several attackers and taking the ball up to the 22.

With Alapati Leiua off the field for a head injury assessment, Brendan Macken came into the Wasps midfield. The increasingly dominant Connacht scrum immediately won a penalty in the Wasps 22 and the kick set up a lineout in the right corner. They won possession, but the drive was stopped in its tracks. Several phases later, on the opposite side of the field Launchbury won a vital turnover to relieve the pressure.

Jake Cooper-Woolley took Marty Moore’s place in the Wasps front row. The next scrum was solid, but untidy possession put Dan Robson under pressure and Connacht won a breakdown penalty. They found touch on the 22 and opted to move the ball along the line, but Wasps won another important penalty. They then turned possession over and Niyi Adeolokun broke away down the right. He was stopped on the 22, but play went back for a Connacht penalty 35 metres out 15 metres in from touch. Carty’s kick went narrowly wide and Joe Simpson came on for Dan Robson, as the game entered the final quarter. 

The replacement scrum-half had an immediate impact, being heavily involved in a patient build-up to a fine try from Joe Launchbury, who went in from 20 metres after the defence had been stretched on the right and play came back infield. Gopperth’s conversion put Wasps 27-17 ahead with 15 minutes left to play.

Kearnan Myall and Thomas Young then made way for James Gaskell and Guy Thompson. With ten minutes left, Christian Wade thought he had secured the try bonus after Jimmy  Gopperth’s long crossfield kick, but the referee who had called a penalty had ruled that insufficient advantage had accrued.

Wasps made up for that disappointment within a minute, after a series of forward charges with Matt Mullan putting in a powerful surge. From the breakdown, quick passes sent Josh Bassett over in the left corner. Gopperth was unable to convert, but Wasps were now looking comfortable with a 15-point advantage and only seven minutes left on the clock.

Three minutes from time, Wasps turned down a simple kick for the posts to set up a lineout near the right corner. They won possession and moved the ball quickly infield, only to knock on, in the shadow of the posts. 

The announcement of Kurtley Beale as Man of the Match was greeted by a huge cheer, as Connacht mounted one last attack in search of a consolation score. It almost came when Rory Parata broke the line, but Eoin McKeon could not hold on to his pass with the line at his mercy. After a couple of attempts to attack from deep, Joe Simpson decided that enough was enough and thumped the ball into the stand to complete a valuable bonus point win. Crucially the visitors went away with nothing, but Wasps know they will face a stiff challenge in Galway next weekend.

Kurtley Beale starts against Connacht at the Ricoh Arena

Wallaby signing Kurtley Beale is set to make his Wasps and European Champions Cup debut this Sunday, on his comeback match following a seven-month injury lay-off, when Wasps take on Connacht at the Ricoh Arena, kick off 1pm.

Wasps are also boosted by the return of England internationals Joe Launchbury and Nathan Hughes, who are the only changes to the pack that started against Worcester last Sunday.
 
Christian Wade returns from a foot injury to start on the right wing, with Josh Bassett lining up on the left. Dan Robson and Jimmy Gopperth form the half back partnership, while Beale starts at inside centre, alongside Alapati Leiua, in Wasps’ midfield combination.
 
Rob Miller returns to his more familiar position of full back, having impressed last week at fly half when he stood in for Danny Cipriani, who is still sidelined by a calf injury.
 
Ahead of the first leg of back-to-back games against Connacht Rugby, Wasps’ Director of Rugby Dai Young said:
 
“We’re really excited about playing Connacht, the defending Pro 12 Champions. They’re a quality side, with threats throughout, and I’m a huge fan of the way they play the game. They probably kick the least out of any European team and they will certainly test our defence. We won’t be able to switch off for a second. Hopefully, if we keep our defence structured, hungry and energised, we can force a few mistakes as well.
 
“We’re not looking too far down the road at this stage, the only thing we are concentrating on is getting our home game right at the Ricoh Arena on Sunday. In this competition, if you get your home game wrong, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re out, but it does put you under a lot of pressure. So it’s a massive game for us at the Ricoh Arena this Sunday.
 
“We go into the game in a good place, after what for me was one of our best wins of the season, because of the way the squad stuck together and worked for each other. They responded really well to the injuries we had picked up.
 
“It’s great to welcome back our captain Joe Launchbury and Nathan Hughes, who did really well on his first start for England last weekend.
 
“We’re also all very excited to have Kurtley Beale back fit and raring to go, although I suspect no one is more excited than Kurtley himself!
 
“I’ve been really impressed with his work ethic since he arrived. He’s worked his socks off to get back and he’s fitted in brilliantly with the squad. We all know how talented a player he is, but he’s also very humble and keen to develop further, which makes him a pleasure to work with.
 
“It was important to wait until he was feeling confident in his knee and his fitness, and it’s great he’s in that place now after being back in training with the squad for three weeks. It will naturally take him a bit of time to get up to speed with our patterns and to return to match-sharpness after a while out, so we’ll be patient on that front, but he’s looked hugely skillful in training and we’re all excited to have him back and ready to play for Wasps.”

Svenska Rugbyförbundet har meddelats det tunga beskedet att utvecklingsbidraget från World Rugby kommer halveras från och med 2017. Från 80 000 £ till 40 000 £

.Bidraget från World Rugby utgör ca ¼ av förbundets totala budget och har varit en förutsättning för det utvecklingsarbete förbundet gjort de senaste åren.

Bidragets nivå har grundat sig på hur förbunden presterar; att förbundet utvecklar sin verksamhet i den riktning som World Rugby vill och att de ser resultat av förbundets program och projekt. För svensk rugby har denna fördelningsmodell hittills varit gynnsam; förbundets bidrag från World Rugby har ökat de senaste åren.

World Rugby förklarar sänkningen med att det har skett en global kalibrering av bidragsnivåerna, dvs att den varit ojämlik tidigare och att det nu är fler länder som ska vara med och dela. World Rugby försäkrade förbundet om att sänkningen inte skulle vara kopplad till ett missnöje med prestation eller utveckling utan gäller generellt.

”Detta är en stor motgång för oss och känns förstås extra tung efter att vi precis genomgått några år av stålbad för att komma till rätta med ekonomin. När vi äntligen börjar komma på rätt köl kommer detta besked.” Säger förbundets ordförande Madeleine Lahti

”Vi förstår redan nu att detta kan få konsekvenser för vår verksamhet och det blir nu upp till styrelsen att se över situationen. Vi gör nu en risk och konsekvensanalys med olika scenarier samt förslag till en åtgärdsplan” Meddelar förbundskassören Cecilia Lundin.

Efter åtgärdsplanen är klar så är det dags att hitta nya vägar och möjligheter för svensk rugby med både aktiva handlingar och ekonomiska lösningar som både kan stärka vår verksamhet och samtidigt utveckla den och öka satsningen framåt. Detta gäller allt från ungdomsrugbyn till våra duktiga landslag.

Det är viktigt att förstå att ungdomar är förbundets långsiktiga framtid men samtidigt vara här och nu. Det gör att det är av största vikt att förbundet nu fortsätter utveckla landslagen och gör en långsiktig satsning så det finns något för våra ungdomar att sikta emot. I detta stora arbete som nu ligger framför oss krävs det att vi både får hjälp och stöd men även att vi nu jobbar framåt.

Ordförande, Madeleine Lahti, kommer träffa Morgan Buckley från World Rugby i ärendet i veckan för att visa för honom vilka konsekvenser det får för svensk rugby och be World Rugby föreslå prioriteringar.

Styrelsen sammanträder sedan i ärendet den 11 dec.

Årets Eldsjäl Britt Westesson!

Det känns fantastiskt att Britt vann årets eldsjäl i Trelleborg igår på Trelleborgsgalan.

Britt var en av de första jag mötte i rugbyns värld då min son ville prova rugby. Hon var sprudlande glad och positiv och kämpade på med en barn/ungdomsskara i väldigt varierande ålder. Det var Britt som gav mig den positiva synen av rugby som sen har stärkts från flera håll.

Jag kan här avslöja att ideen att nominera Britt kom från Sonne som hade läst i tidningen och pratade med mig om det.

Under alla år jag varit med inom rugbyn och Pingvin så har Britt fixat och donat och alltid ställt upp oavsett vad det gällt. Förutom allt praktiskt som hon alltid gör såsom resor, träningar, tidningsannonser mm. mm. mm. så det jag verkligen har uppskattat genom alla år är hennes otroliga klarsynthet kring vad ett styrelsebeslut eller en inriktning kan få för följder och vad slutsatsen blir om vi gör si eller så. I en styrelse är det väldigt viktigt att ha personer med den förmågan som kan få alla att inse hur bra eller dålig en ide är! (Så när kommer du tillbaka Britt???? :) )

I en intervju säger en av våra hetaste landslagsbackar i fotboll detta kring massa rykten och hur han har det idag:

– Jag får spela vecka ut och vecka in och det är väldigt viktigt som ung spelare för att kunna utvecklas.

Detta ser jag som ett problem i svensk rugby just nu.... upp tom U16 är det ganska regelbundet med matcher mm men efter det?

I vår högsta serie spelar man ca 12 matcher per år plus lite vänskaps/träningsmatcher men det är på tok för lite. Skall man följa vad fotbollsstjärnan säger så borde våra killar spela vecka ut och vecka in under säsongen dvs ca 25-30 matcher under ett år...

Viss skillnad på 25 och 12....

Mot VM 2021 Nästa år 2017 är det dags för Rugby VM i Dublin men redan nu börjar förberedelserna för de svenska damerna mot VM 2021.

Jonas Ahl som är ansvarig för hela 15-manna-satsningen har nu börjat bygga sitt team inför säsongen 2017. Han kommer själv ta rodret som förbundskapten och vid sin sida kommer han ha Adam Jartén som under några år varit en av ledarna för årets svenska mästare Stockholm Exiles.

Tim Schumacher som sen tidigare finns med kring 7-manna landslaget kommer ta rollen som manager. Jacob Lykke Olesen är lagets läkare.

”Det känns redan nu som ett starkt team. Vi saknar dock fortfarande support på fysio-sidan både när det gäller Strength och conditioning men även förebyggande/omhändertagande vid skador. Där behöver vi få in någon till för att vara kompletta.” Säger Jonas Ahl.

Förra gången Sverige var i VM 2010 saknades en struktur underifrån som gjorde att Sverige hade svårt att hålla sig kvar på den nivån. Denna gång har man tagit lärdom och vill bygga en mer långsiktigt och hållbar modell.

”Målet är att långsiktigt bygga upp landslaget med en hållbar struktur för att kunna ta sig till VM igen och därifrån fortsätta utveckla svenska rugby.” fortsätter Jonas Ahl.

Satsningen drar igång med ett öppet läger i slutet av juli 2017 varifrån en bred trupp tas ut som kommer fortsätta med läger och träningsmatcher. Efter hand kommer laget ta sig tillbaka in i Rugby Europes tävlingar och därigenom sikta på ett kval för VM 2021.

Frida Nilsson är en trotjänare som spelat rugby för Pingvin sedan tidiga barnsben. Stiftelsen tilldelar Frida ett stipendium på 7500 kr för sin rugbyutveckling och spel med Cooke RFC i Belfast, Irland under vintersäsongen 2016/17

Förutom spel för Pingvin har Frida representerat både Skåne och Sverige. Kort efter sin debut i damlandslaget drabbades Frida av en knäskada men har nu gjort en stark comeback och är återigen aktuell för 7-manna landslaget under vintern och våren.
