Dai Young efter matchen

DAI:  POST  MATCH REACTION
Following Wasps’ bonus point win against Worcester Warriors, Director of Rugby Dai Young acknowledged that his side rode their luck a little, securing the win in the final ten minutes of the game.

“I think we got out of jail today really. We had lots of possession without threatening as much as we should have and we were very loose with the ball. We had plenty of opportunities, but didn’t come away with the scores.

“In fairness to Worcester, they kept on plugging away and with ten minutes to go, they probably looked like the more likely team to come away with the victory today.

“We were often inaccurate and struggled to get penetration. We were too lateral and sometimes tried to create something when it wasn’t on, so that’s something we’ve got to keep working on. Defensively we were good, set piece we were fine and we had a lot of possession, but the lack of execution when we got the ball was particularly frustrating.

“Having said that, I was really pleased with the attitude and desire of the players today. We know we didn’t play well, but we didn’t give up when we were nine points down with around ten minutes to go. We kept plugging away and believing in each other to come away with a win in the end. We should also say a big thank you to our Wasps' fans who were fantastic again today. They really got behind the boys, even when things weren't going well and that sort of vocal support makes such a difference."

The bonus point sees Wasps move up to 6th in the Aviva Premiership table as it stands, which Young was happy to take:

“Quite frankly, we could have played really well and yet still come away with the same thing – 5 points. We got the 5 points despite not playing well, so you’ve got to take that.”

Asked whether this could be a turning point in Wasps’ league form, Young said: “We’d like to think so. Hopefully, further down the line we might look back at this result and use it as a bit of a springboard to kick us on. I think we did look a little edgy and nervous out there, because we know our performances lately haven’t been up to standard. But hopefully, having come through that and collected 5 points, it will be a springboard to kick on a bit.”

When asked what he thought Eddie Jones would have made of Wasps in terms of international prospects, he replied:

“He’ll probably see Wasps have been on a bit of a roller coaster recently, but he knows enough about our players who are pushing for international recognition. We have a number of candidates who are putting their hands up and I’ve had really positive discussions with Eddie about them and they are certainly pushing.  As we all know, there are a lot of good players in England so it will be interesting to see the squad he announces next week."

There was also praise from Young for Wasps' replacements, who came on and made a big impact, as well as for Man of the Match Sam Jones: “He was outstanding today and was deservedly man of the match. He was excellent defensively, putting in some massive hits and he carried really strongly. His work rate is always excellent and I am sure he will get international recognition at some stage. Obviously there’s a bit of a queue on at the minute, but he’s still a young man and is only making waves in the right direction at the moment.”
