Match Reaction - Dai Young Post Newcastle Falcons

Wasps' Director of Rugby was pleased with his side's ability to grind out a bonus point win against a tough Newcastle Falcons side.

“I was pleased to go away with five points as you can’t do any better than that.
“It was a bit of a scrappy game where we did well in patches and struggled in patches. You’ve got to give Newcastle a lot of credit as well, as they put us under a lot of pressure at times.
“We weren’t quite as clinical as we would liked to have been and missed a couple of clear opportunities, but overall I’m pleased with the major areas and we did well today.
“The wind was a big factor and the old cliche about a game of two halves certainly applied.
“We had to carry a lot against the wind in the first half and although we didn’t want to kick the leather off the ball in the second half, when it wasn’t on we used the elements well.
“I thought our half-backs controlled the game well and both of them have been excellent over the last couple of months for us.”
Asked about the brace of tries scored by Wasps’ scrum half, Young said: “Dan Robson is a very smart player as well - he spotted the goalpost and got the try over as a result. 
“I’ve always said we haven’t got a No.1 and No.2 scrum half, we have two No.1’s who are as good as anything about, so while I’m really pleased with how Dan has played, I know Joe Simpson will come back in the next couple of weeks and put the pressure on him and we’re really blessed in that department.”
With four games left of the regular Aviva Premiership season, Young was comfortable that Wasps were well on track to reach the target they had set themselves at the beginning of the season:
“The main thing for us this year was to reach the top six and we’re as good as there now - we’d have to have a bit of a disaster for that not to happen now.
“Top four is probably over-reaching where a lot of people thought we would be at the start of the year.
“I’m certainly not getting above myself. Top four is still a battle and is still going to the wire and the next game will have a big bearing on it.
“There’s too many big games around at the moment for us to look too far ahead. This season is relentless with one big match after another and certainly next week against Saints is a huge game in the top four battle.
“If we can get a result from that it would put us in a very good position for the top four, but we’re playing against Northampton and we all know how tough and experienced they are.
“They’re used to battling games out to be in the top four year after year, so we know we’re up against it next week, but we’ve got confidence and if we play like we can we can get that result.”
