Jacobs grateful for Wasps' support
"I don't think you've seen the best of Wasps yet this season."
A bumper bank holiday weekend crowd at the Ricoh Arena could not help Wasps in their quest to become the first team to beat Saracens this season, but centre Ben Jacobs says the swell in support did not go unnoticed.
An attendance of 24,053 saw Wasps lose 26-16 to the unbeaten league leaders, holding their own until Duncan Taylor's 67th-minute try.
That crowd has only been bettered anywhere in Aviva Premiership Rugby this term by games staged at Twickenham this season.
And Jacobs believes his team are indebted to those that have turned out in their numbers and made Wasps feel so at home in Coventry since last year's move north from London.
"Ever since we moved up to Coventry the support we have had has been awesome," said the 33-year-old.
"It was incredible to play in front of over 25,000 fans on Sunday and it was a shame we couldn't get the result for them, but their continued support can only make us stronger.
"I don't think you've seen the best of Wasps yet this season."
Wasps, eighth in the Aviva Premiership Rugby table, trailed at half-time by two Owen Farrell penalties to one in reply from Jimmy Gopperth.
But the teams were locked at 9-9 54 minutes in when Gopperth again bisected the posts after Elliot Daly's penalty.
The game turned though in a whirlwind, with Taylor and Farrell both crossing in a five-minute spell to render Frank Halai's try four minutes from time scant consolation.
But Jacobs believe his team should take great encouragement for the length of time with which they stood toe-to-toe with the reigning Aviva Premiership Rugby champions.
"It was a tight game," he added.
"When you play against Saracens you have got to compete for the whole 80 minutes and there was that five-ten minute period when the momentum changed.
"Once they get ahead it's very difficult to haul them back.
"We were a bit disappointed with the result, but we know we competed well.
"We were under pressure at the set-piece and they are a good kick-and-chase team, but we competed well for 80 minutes and we were disappointed to lose to them."
